Project Summary

Sproutt was engaged by the Alexandrina Council to investigate flooding issues and develop a remediation design for Channon Street, which had been experiencing significant flood damage to residential properties. The project involved hydraulic modelling using DRAINS to assess the existing drainage conditions and identify contributing factors to the flooding. Based on the modelling outcomes, Sproutt developed a range of concept-level remediation options for the Council’s consideration. Following the Council’s selection of a preferred option, Sproutt proceeded with further detailed design work.

Our Approach

Sproutt’s approach to the Channon Street Flood Investigation and Remediation Design was underpinned by a holistic, catchment-wide perspective and a commitment to practical, community-focused outcomes. Recognising that localised flooding was influenced by broader upstream and downstream interactions, Sproutt undertook a comprehensive hydraulic assessment using DRAINS, capturing the full extent of the contributing catchment. This enabled a clear understanding of flow behaviour, capacity constraints, and overland flow paths across the area.

Outcomes

The modelling outcomes informed the development of a suite of remediation concepts tailored to the site’s physical and urban context. These options were evaluated in close consultation with the Alexandrina Council to ensure alignment with local priorities and long-term resilience goals. Following the selection of a preferred solution, Sproutt progressed the design to the 50% Preliminary Design stage, integrating best-practice stormwater engineering principles and constructability considerations. This approach ensured that the proposed works not only addressed immediate flood risks but also supported sustainable water management across the broader catchment.
