Traffic Data Collection and Data ProcessingProject Summary
The study encompassed the entirety of Salisbury City Centre. The project's aim was to determine the entry and exit points for traffic and to assess how long individuals typically spend in the city centre. It identified zones with significant vehicle and pedestrian activity, peak traffic periods, frequent travel paths, and locations where delays are most likely to occur.
Our Approach
Solar-powered cameras were deployed across the city centre for four weeks, capturing daily footage that was analysed by AI to extract vehicle and pedestrian data. The system produced detailed reports on traffic volumes, composition, speeds, and movement patterns, while also identifying congestion hotspots and unusual activity. Cameras were repositioned as needed, and Council approval was obtained for installations and mobile camera operations.
Outcomes
Reports included traffic volumes per observation point, with hourly breakdowns and peak periods highlighted, along with percentages of heavy commercial vehicles and buses. Origin-destination data and overall traffic flow patterns through the city centre were analysed. Pedestrian volumes, movement directions, and hourly breakdowns were recorded at key locations over one week, with data captured daily between 7 am and 7 pm. Camera placements were reviewed regularly, and recommendations for adjustments or additional coverage were made based on daily analysis.
