Design, documentation, visualisation, consultationProject Summary
Penola’s Church Street serves as the town's commercial and social hub, featuring pubs, hotels, shops, and community services. However, despite its central role, the area around the War Memorial Park, located at the entry to town, lacked vitality and pedestrian activity. Despite being near to a pub and Visitor Information Centre, this section felt disconnected from the rest of the town, failing to attract people to linger and explore.
Our Approach
Sproutt redesigned this section of Church Street to create a greener, more welcoming gateway into Penola’s heart. The design focused on encouraging pedestrian activity by adding outdoor seating, improving street crossing points, and creating spaces for people to gather. The aim was to enhance the sense of arrival and make it easier for residents and visitors to move around the town on foot or by bike, increasing the overall vibrancy of the town centre.
Outcomes
The streetscape improvements have revitalised this section of Church Street, making Penola’s town centre more accessible and inviting. By introducing spaces that encourage community interaction and pedestrian movement, the changes have fostered a stronger connection between the park, businesses, and other town destinations. The redesign has drawn more visitors to Penola, creating a more dynamic environment and promoting the town as a desirable stop for both locals and tourists.
