Project Summary

Vincent Street and Vincent Place, located in Adelaide’s Southeastern Precinct, are key streets within the CBD that required improvements to better support walking, cycling, and local residents' needs. The City of Adelaide aimed to transform these spaces into people-friendly streets while maintaining functionality for vehicles and ensuring no loss of parking.

Our Approach

Sproutt was engaged to redesign the streetscape, focusing on increasing tree planting, enhancing understorey greenery, and improving drainage. The project created a shared street environment that balanced pedestrian and cyclist access with vehicle movements. Community consultation played an essential role, with positive feedback driving the design process. Despite challenges, including the narrow road corridor and existing services, Sproutt’s rigorous investigations and conceptual optioneering helped move the previously stalled project forward.

Outcomes

The redesigned Vincent Street and Vincent Place streetscapes resulted in a vibrant, green environment that prioritised people. The project successfully increased the City’s canopy coverage without compromising parking, enhancing the experience for all users. The collaboration between landscape architects, traffic, and civil engineers delivered a solution that benefited the local community and set a precedent for urban streetscape design in the City of Adelaide.
