Detailed DesignProject Summary
Sproutt was engaged by the Port Augusta City Council to deliver the detailed design for the West Side Shared Path, an 800-metre extension to an existing active transport corridor. The design scope included alignment of the shared path to Austroads Guide to Road Design (AGRD) Part 6A, development of compliant ramp and grade treatments for DDA accessibility, and preparation of coordinated crossing and traffic management designs. A detailed cost estimate was also provided to support project budgeting and delivery planning.
Our Approach
Sproutt’s approach to the West Side Shared Path project was defined by context-driven design and proactive coordination. Positioned atop a levee bank, the path required tailored engineering solutions to meet both structural constraints and accessibility standards. Sproutt developed a series of DDA-compliant ramp designs to address changes in elevation, ensuring safe and inclusive access for all users. The team applied AGRD Part 6A guidance to align path geometry, sightlines, and surface treatments with best practices, while also managing crossing layouts and traffic safety features. Throughout the design process, Sproutt maintained close engagement with Council stakeholders to address site-specific challenges and facilitate a smooth transition into construction. Sproutt's traffic engineers ensured that the design met the requirements of the Australian Standards and was aligned with Austroads guidelines with regards to path alignment, cross section, dimensions and sight lines. We also prepared a Traffic Impact Statement for DIT approval.
Outcomes
The West Side Shared Path provides a high-functioning active transport link that blends accessibility, safety, and thoughtful design. Sproutt’s technical solution responded to complex site conditions on the levee bank by delivering DDA-compliant ramp treatments and optimised path geometry that aligns with AGRD Part 6A standards. The completed design supports safe pedestrian and cyclist movement, integrates effective traffic management strategies at key crossings, and offers a blueprint for future expansions. Through close collaboration with Port Augusta City Council, the project has advanced smoothly from concept to delivery, reinforcing Sproutt’s reputation for outcome-focused infrastructure that enhances community connectivity.
