stormwater culvert maintenance inspections & emergency flooding response

Department for Infrastructure and Transport

Sproutt was engaged by DIT to complete operational and Maintenance inspections across regional and remote State Roads and Highways (DIT SA) far across the North, West and East of the State.

5000 regional and remote culverts were inspected over 6 weeks, with a 3 week lead time for meeting the resourcing requirements.

Accuracy and reliability was key to meeting the project goals within the tight deadline. We deployed 4 teams of engineers and experienced asset inspectors that could proactively plan logistics of their routes, as well as maintain data accuracy through stringent methodologies and workflows. Our teams were equipped with Site-Spec vehicles suitable for the very long distances travelled and remote conditions.

The Sproutt teams were required to use the client’s bespoke developed asset information system to scope and undertake the audits. However, given there were 4 Sproutt teams as well as the client’s own inspection crews working in regional proximity, we also utilised mapping and spatial analysis in ESRI ArcGIS to plan the most efficient routes / regions for the teams.

Some initial constraints were discovered in the client’s bespoke asset information system, with the data required to be uploaded in daily instalments due to no 4G signal being available onsite during the day. The limits of allowable upload size limits meant that uploads could fail if too large and audit data was lost. The issue was identified early in the project and proactively mitigated through a separate methodology for cataloguing and updating the large photographic uploads.

We delivered quality condition assessments for 5000 culverts on time and on budget. In the delivery of this project there were zero WHS near misses or incidents. Good quality and uniform data was provided to the client in the required formats.
